Solar Blinds vs. Window Film: A 20-Year Veteran's Perspective

Solar Blinds vs. Window Film: A 20-Year Veteran's Perspective

For over two decades, we've been tackling the challenge of problem windows. When a long-standing school client recently faced issues with glare and heat gain, the question arose: window film or solar blinds? In this case, I recommended our Large High-Performance solar blinds, and here's why.

Value and Flexibility: A School's Needs First

My primary motivation was to provide the best long-term value and flexibility for the school. We had been gradually replacing unreliable vertical blinds with window films and standard roller blinds. However, the school unexpectedly received funding for new windows, a development that would have altered our previous approach.

I was asked to provide a quote for re-filming some problem areas after the new windows were installed. The new window glazing bar configuration meant the existing blinds no longer aligned properly, creating unsightly gaps. Furthermore, the poor quality of the frames and their installation raised concerns about their longevity. I suspected the frames would need replacing long before the window film's lifespan. The doors, while having decent aluminum frames, featured saggy UPVC in the main glazing.

A Hybrid Solution: Solar Blinds and Window Film

My proposal was a hybrid approach: solar-backed, highly reflective commercial-grade screen blinds for the main glazing, made as large as possible to accommodate potential future window size alterations, combined with Solar Gard TrueVue 05 internally fitted window film for the emergency escape doors.

Both the TrueVue 05 film and the solar blinds effectively address glare from direct or low sun, achieving a 50% solar heat gain reduction even on modern Low-E glass. We also incorporated a band of etched film on the lower panes in certain areas for added privacy when the blinds are raised. Etched films are a cost-effective alternative to high-quality solar control films, minimizing potential losses if the windows are replaced again.

Future-Proofing and Flexibility

This approach future-proofs the school, offering flexible heat and light management, daytime privacy, and a connection to the outside world. The aluminum backing of the blinds also helps retain winter heat when lowered.
